About the Event

For the first time in Adelaide,  Ben Geurts will be sharing the Kaizen K9 approach to dog reactivity and aggression in a targeted, two-day workshop.

Over the decades, Ben has refined a unique and highly successful approach to working with reactive and aggressive dogs. This workshop will unpack the causes of reactivity, how to assess the dog in front of you, and how to build a practical rehabilitation plan.

Date: 20–21 June 2026

Time: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm

Location: OZCORPK9 HQ, Windsor Gardens

Ben Geurts has been training dogs for over 26 years. His background includes working in the Army, RAAF, special forces environments, and training dogs for tactical units within the Australian Defence Force and Police. He is also a certified teaching helper in IGP and has worked extensively with companion dogs since 2015, including reactive and aggressive dogs on an almost daily basis.

Throughout the workshop, Ben will discuss:

• The different causes of dog reactivity

• How to diagnose what is driving the behaviour

• Why common techniques often fail

• Why reactivity is usually a classical conditioning problem

• Why an operant-only approach can be counterproductive

• Ethology, counter-conditioning, BAT, CAT, and differential reinforcement

• Why punishment is rarely the best place to start

• How to create a practical plan for each attending dog

We will also address common questions and misconceptions, including:

Should you correct looking or growling?

Should you distract with toys or food?

Should you rush your dog away from triggers?

Is your current approach making things worse?

This is not a one-dimensional approach. It is nuanced, deeply considered, and heavily supported by science.
